METAFUNCTIONS
- IDEATIONAL FUNCTION
The
ideational metafunction divides into:
- Experiential function: is used to describe experience. Three elements representing experience in CLAUSE:
1)
Process divides into: material, mental, relational,
behavioural, verbal, and existential.

3). Circumstances divide into: extent, location,
manner, cause, contingency, role, matter, accompaniment, and angle.
- Logical Function: is used to relate experience. Logic: relation between two variables, relation of clause in CC related words: relate,relative, relativity, relation, and ratio. Logical function divides into: equal and unequal.
1). equal: parataxis, paratactic relation based on order.
2). Unequal: hypotaxis, hypotactic (independent and dependent)
- INTERPERSONAL FUNCTION
The
interpersonal function divides into:
- Mood and Residue

- Finite

- Complement RESIDUE
- Adjunct
- Finite and Predicator
- Finite is defined as verbal operator that is an aspect of verbal phrase
which, together with subject, makes something arguable.
- Predicator is the verb phrase minus finite.
- TEXTUAL FUNCTION
Textual
function: organize message, relevance to context (linguistic and social).
A
clause as a unit of message is constituted by Theme and Rheme.
a. Theme is the starting point or the
point of departure of the message.
Types of Theme:
1). unmarked: In
situation where a theme simultaneously functions as the subject the theme.
2) Marked: when
the theme is not conflated with or mapped out the subject the theme.
3). Simple
theme: one element of the clause functions as the theme.
4). multiple
theme: more than one element.

Textual theme: - conjunctions: and, because, so, …
- relatives: who, which,
whose,…
- conjunctives: in
addition, besides, …
- continuatives: well, yes, ah, ya,…
b. Interpersonal
theme: - Finite: do, did, does, is, …
- A Wh-element: what, who, where,..
- Vocative: John, son, my darling,..
- Mood adjunct: really, actually,…
c. Topical
theme: as stated, is coded by the first element of the transitivity system.
b. Rheme is the rest of the message of the
clause after the theme.
